OpenAI has recently unveiled a significant enhancement to ChatGPT’s capabilities, introducing powerful new image-generation and editing features known as 4o Image Generation. This major update allows users, including both free and subscription-based accounts, to effortlessly generate and modify detailed images and clear, readable text directly within ChatGPT.
With the ability to create visuals featuring transparent backgrounds, designers, brands, small businesses, and creative beginners now have an easy way to produce assets perfect for custom seamless pattern creation on Patterned AI.
Key highlights of this update include:
With this powerful new update, creating custom visual assets for business or personal use has never been easier. Users can effortlessly generate and download high-quality images and clear, readable text – perfect for branding, marketing campaigns and personalised products. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through fun, easy, and creative ways to design seamless patterns using visual elements generated by ChatGPT.
Let’s begin by generating some custom text using ChatGPT. Historically, AI-generated text in images often lacked accuracy or clarity, especially with complex compositions. However, with the latest update, generating visually appealing and error-free text has become remarkably easy.
For our first prompt, we’ll ask ChatGPT to design a stylish logo for Patterned AI inspired by a vibrant 1970s aesthetic. Remember, if you're planning to use your generated image in a seamless pattern, it’s important to specify that you require a transparent background.
Here's an example of the image we generated: notice the exceptional quality, harmonious colours and consistent typography. A standout feature is that we can refine the design further through a conversational interface. For instance, let’s ask ChatGPT to convert all letters to uppercase and slightly reduce the size of "AI".
In our test, ChatGPT successfully converted the letters to uppercase, though the adjustment of "AI" wasn’t fully applied. Minor issues like this may occasionally occur, but considering how quickly and intuitively we can now produce professional-quality visuals simply through conversation, these small hiccups are easy to overlook.
Now, let’s download the logo we've just created and import it directly into the From Image tab on your Patterned AI Dashboard. Within this tab, you can customise the size and layout of your main design element, choose your preferred background colour, and adjust the composition. For this example, we selected a second pattern arrangement to complement our logo design, opted for a light beige background colour to enhance the 70s aesthetic, and reduced the spacing between elements to feature larger, bolder logos. You can also scroll vertically and horizontally or zoom in and out until you're satisfied with the composition of your design.
When your pattern is finished, Patterned AI gives you two convenient download options:
Once you've downloaded your pattern, you can even return to ChatGPT and ask it to generate realistic mock-ups showcasing how your design would look on various products.
In this next part of our tutorial, let's explore designing seamless patterns using multiple elements. Seamless patterns are incredibly versatile and can be used for numerous applications, including branding, product packaging, social media graphics, textile and fashion design, website backgrounds, stationery, and much more.
We’ll create a pattern tailored specifically for a makeup brand or beauty salon. An exciting feature of the latest ChatGPT update is the ability to specify exact HEX colour codes when generating your visual assets. This functionality is especially useful if you already have an established brand palette or signature colours.
For this pattern, we'll use a feminine and sophisticated palette of two shades:
If you don’t have your HEX codes yet and need inspiration, Pinterest is an excellent resource for discovering beautiful, harmonious colour combinations.
We’ll reserve the blush rose shade as our background colour in Patterned AI, and first, we’ll generate our visual assets in the coral shade using ChatGPT.
There are two ways to approach designing a pattern with multiple elements:
For most seamless patterns, creating 5-6 different elements typically provides enough visual variety for an engaging and appealing design.
Don’t hesitate if it takes several attempts to pinpoint the right illustrative style for your elements: part of the creative process is experimentation. Feel free to try different illustration styles (watercolour, flat vector, minimalist, or fashion illustration, for example) until you discover the style that resonates best with your brand aesthetic.
Once you’ve found your ideal style, it becomes straightforward to generate the remaining elements by simply referring back to your chosen style and colour in your ChatGPT prompts. For our beauty-inspired pattern, we chose a fashion illustration style, which aligns perfectly with the sophisticated yet playful theme.
When you've generated all your desired elements, upload each one to your tile in Patterned AI by clicking the Add Image button in the dashboard.
After uploading, you can easily arrange these elements into your desired composition. You might choose to keep them vertically aligned for a clean, orderly pattern, or rotate elements slightly to create dynamic visual movement. You can also adjust the spacing between elements reducing it to create a denser, busier pattern or increasing spacing for a more minimalist aesthetic.
One of Patterned AI’s standout features is its intuitive interface, letting you edit your pattern directly to see how every movement or resizing affects your design – an advantage you don’t have with traditional design software.
In our example, we chose to rotate the elements slightly to introduce dynamism, and we selected the blush rose (#E0C1BB) as our background colour, complementing our coral (#E99075) elements beautifully.
Here's how our finished pattern turned out:
As you can see, this elegant pattern is perfect for makeup packaging or promotional materials for a beauty salon. You might notice a slight colour inconsistency from ChatGPT when following exact HEX codes, but you can either ask ChatGPT to adjust these colours or simply embrace the variations as part of your unique design.
Now, let’s head back to ChatGPT to visualise how our pattern would look on real products:
